How to Properly Care for Wood Shutters

Dusting:

• Painted and stained wood shutters should be cleaned often with a clean dry cloth or feather duster.
• Vacuum shutters with a soft-brush upholstery attachment.
• If necessary, use a lightly damp cloth to remove any spots. Never apply harsh cleaning fluid to the shutters because it can cause damage.
• For stained-wood shutters, periodic treatment with a mild wood preservative will keep your shutters looking like fine furniture.

Proper usage:

• Use the tilt bar when opening and closing louvers to ensure the stress of tilting is dispersed evening on all louvers.
• Tilting a single louver is not recommended.
• Shutter panels are designed to remain closed in the frames and the louvers may be opened and closed for privacy.
• To reduce stress on the hinges, panels should not hang into the room for extended period of time.

No Water Exposure:

• Exposure to water or moisture can cause damage to the finish of wood shutters.
• Do not leave a window open when it is raining, damp or if sprinklers hit the window.
• Wood shutters near water fixtures such as kitchens, tubs and showers are not recommended. Poly or vinyl shutters are perfect for this type of application.
