Question:
Since this is a custom order, how long will it take to be manufactured and installed?
Answer:
Avalon Shutters has a 28 Day Installation Guarantee

Question:
How far into my room will an outside mount frame project?
Answer:
The average outside mount frame only projects 1 1/8” off of the wall, which is very similar to a picture frame.

Question:
When is an inside mount recommended?
Answer:
An Inside mount is recommended when there are restrictions that prevent an outside mount application.

Question:
What are specialty shutters?
Answer:
Specialty shutters are designed for doors and window openings that are not rectangular in shape. Avalon is able to custom design specialty shutters for any shaped window.

  • Sunburst is a “curved top shutter” that has a center point at the bottom called a “hub”, from which all the tapered louvers extend. The louvers are individually movable by hand. Sunbursts do not have a tilt rod.

  • An arch is a “curved top shutter” that has horizontal louvers all the way to the top. All louvers that can be made movable are made to be so, although most panels have at least 1 or 2 louvers that must be fixed closed because the tilt rod that controls the movement of all the other louvers does not intersect.

  • Pass thru windows and doorways. There are some size limitations due to support issues.

  • Bi-Fold door shutters that can open up just like regular window shutters

  • By-Pass door shutters, which are on a track, allow one panel to slide behind the other panel similar to closet doors.

  • We do not make shutters for skylights.

Question:
What is the maximum panel width and maximum panel height for wood?
Answer:
For 2 ½” louver size – Maximum panel width is 36 inches.
For 3 ½” louver size – Maximum panel width is 36 inches.
For 4 ½” louver size – Maximum panel width is 36 inches.
There is no real maximum panel height. We have done panels 12’ in height. Wood panels over 106” need a divider rail.

Question:
Why do I need a T-post when the opening I am trying to cover is greater than 94” wide?
Answer:
A T-post will distribute the weight of the panels to other parts of the framing, preventing sagging.

Question:
Can I get pull knobs for my wood shutters?
Answer:
If the customer wants to provide their own pull knobs and hardware, our installer will put them on the panels at the time of the install provided they work on their panel style.

Question:
What type of construction does Avalon Shutters use?
Answer:
  • Multi-doweled joints with holes drilled on 1” centers..

  • Louver staples 7/8” in length, each staple holds 90 lbs. of pressure

  • Only epoxy-coated staples are used for maximum hold.

  • Tilt bar Staples are 3/4” in length.

  • Components are UV primed before assembly.

  • We use water borne stains and paint.

  • Multi panels have rabbetted stiles (a “notch” is cut the entire length of the panel to provide an overlap that acts as a light block).

  • A nylon tension louver pin is used; using this type of louver pin in connection with our tension screw system virtually eliminates all problems with louver rotation.

  • A mortised hinge is used on the shutters; the hinges are recessed into the panels allowing for a tight fit plus adding strength.

Question:
What is the proper way to open and close shutters?
Answer:
Pull down on the tilt bar to open the louvers and lift up on the tilt bar to close the louvers. To open the shutter panels, tilt louvers open using the tilt bar, reach behind stile and pull out towards the front.

Question:
Do shutters block out light or darken a room?
Answer:
Shutters are primarily used as a light deflection. They are not considered a blackout window covering but do provide excellent privacy for the homeowner.

Question:
Why are you charging me sales tax?
Answer:
We are required by the state Board of Equalization to collect and pay all sales tax on any job in which we provide the installation.
